About House of Speech

House of Speech is the online home of Dr Matthew Moreland, a speech production consultant based in Norwich, UK.

Moreland TalkingMatthew is a clinical linguist by background and currently works as a Lecturer in Phonetics at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and freelance pronunciations editor for the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). After obtaining a BA in Linguistics & Clinical Language Studies from the University of Reading, he proceeded to a PhD in Applied Linguistics (English phonology).  He first taught English linguistics and phonetics at university level as a PhD student in 2006 and has since taught pronunciation skills to international learners of English, academic writing and linguistic analysis skills to English language students, and clinical phonetics and phonology to student speech and language therapists.

In order to better contextualise his phonetics teaching, Matthew qualified as a speech and language therapist in 2015.  In 2016, Matthew was awarded a 'Most Innovative Teaching' award by students at UEA for using parodies of popular songs to teach elements of phonetics.

Matthew has also taught communication skills to paramedic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, midwifery, and nursing students, as well as to postgraduate advanced professional practice students.  Following in family training and development footsteps, Matthew has applied his expertise to enhancing established 'Presenting with Confidence' materials, some of which he has been using in training undergraduate and postgraduate health professionals at UEA.  Matthew has developed skills as a highly-rated public speaker to a wide range of audiences and ages through outreach events to young people hosted by UEA and through lay service-leading, teaching, and preaching engagements at churches over the past 17 years.

In addition to his lecturing role, Matthew's phonetic expertise is further evidenced by his work with the OED, a relationship which began in 2012 and has seen him add and edit tens of thousands of pronunciations to the OED as well as recording thousands of words for oed.com (he can also be heard as the British voice of 'twerk' on Google).  In the past, Matthew has taught on the prestigious UCL Summer Course in English Phonetics, advised TEFL teachers on pronunciation skills, and consulted on speech and language therapy software.

Matthew is the current Treasurer and Information Officer for the British Association of Clinical Linguistics, and a member of both the British Association of Academic Phoneticians and the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.

Much of Matthew's time is currently taken as the Admissions Lead for Speech & Language Therapy at UEA.  Matthew's PhD investigated the 'y' sound in words such as 'cute', and he applied his phonotactic probability calculator further in looking at phonological patterns in stammering and dyslexia during his Masters in Speech & Language Therapy.  More information about Matthew's research can be found in Resource & Links.

Please note that, although registered with the Health & Care Professions Council in respect of his work with UEA, Matthew does not offer private advice in the capacity of a Speech & Language Therapist.  For private speech and language therapy in your area, please visit ASLTIP here.
